The Influence of Ancient Greece on Contemporary World
It is no secret that the whole Western Civilization in this or that way stems from the culture that thrived on the Balkan Peninsula more than two thousand years ago and was characterized by unusual level of development of a number of sciences and schools of thought. Ancient Greece was something like a beacon of civilization among the ocean of barbarity – and even the very word “barbarian” was first used by the Greeks and meant every person that did not speak Greek language and thus wasn’t considered to be a member of cultured humanity.
The Glory of Ancient Egypt
Egypt is probably best known for its magnificent ancient pyramids. These unique installations serve as a proof that an incredibly sophisticated civilization came into being a long time ago. Although lately Egypt seems to be regarded merely as an inexpensive holiday destination, with the most common associations being “pyramids”, “camels”, and “all-inclusive”, the Ancient Egypt was a place where a lot of inventions that we use this very day were made. It doesn’t feel that important anymore, as we tend to take these things for granted, because it seems only natural that somebody invented, say, a toothbrush some time ago. And yet if you give it a little more thought it can in fact blow your mind.
For Those Who Wonder if “Alice in Wonderland” is Worth Watching
Tim Burton’s“Alice in Wonderland” was probably the most anticipated movie of the year 2010. But is it any good? First of all, I should probably mention that hardcore Lewis Carroll fans may find very disappointing. The movie is merely based on the book. It features most of the same characters and a couple of the same locations, but the story is completely different. Alice is no longer a little girl, but an unconventional young woman who has the same dream of finding herself in Wonderland every night, until one day it happens in real life. Her arrival was expected. Alice is supposed to save the inhabitants from the evil Red Queen and get the reign back to her kind sister, the White Queen. She knows nothing about it, but she is meant to be the knight in shining armor, both figuratively and literally speaking.
Ancient Rome as a Direct Predecessor of European Civilization
Ancient Rome, though unmistakably belonging to the antiquity along with Greece and some other nations of ancient Mediterranean, possesses a number of quite unique features that made its role in the world’s history very special. At the first glance one may think that Rome and Greece are almost identical in their architecture, sculpture, system of religious beliefs and overall style. There is, nevertheless, an inherent difference lying beneath.
Global Warming as a Political Issue
We have all grown up believing that the world is constantly on the brink of catastrophe, the particular catastrophe being in different periods of time the ozone hole, the global warming (aka greenhouse effect), the nuclear winter or something else, with only two points always the same: the catastrophe is anthropogenic and can only be averted by massive government involvement.
